Hungary’s defence minister has underscored the importance of strengthening the country’s security.
Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky noted at an event in Budapest on Saturday that he had recently ordered the armed forces to be put on high alert. He told the more than 400 non-commissioned officers who took their oaths at Heroes’ Square that they would play a key role in the renewal of the Hungarian armed forces.
He said the army’s revamp which began a few years ago needed to be speeded up in view of the war in Ukraine and mounting migration pressure on the southern border.

The minister said the government was providing all the moral and financial support for bolstering Hungary’s security and protecting the homeland, with
“unprecedented” salary increases for the National Guard, the establishment of a national defence fund, and defence spending hitting the NATO requirement of 2 percent of GDP next year.
Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, commander of the Hungarian Armed Forces, said a key objective was to reorganise the armed forces and reduce red tape to ensure that it becomes a “determining force” in the region, with as many trained, deployable, soldiers as possible.
